Photo: Sharma Pratyush / twitter Flood water stood at almost 1 metre in some areas of Tainan. worst affected appear to have been the Guiren, Rende, Yongkang and Anding districts. Transport has been badly affected with many roads blocked and vehicles stranded in the flood water. Railway tracks across the region have been flooded and many schools closed in the region. Around 70 people have been evacuated in Tainan as a precaution. The flooding was so bad that the local government of Tainan decided it would be easier to shut their offices and give employees a day off.

The worst of the rain fell in a 12 hour period up to 13:00 hrs / 1pm on Tuesday 12 August. According to Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau, the rainfall figures are as follows:

Tainan

Sigang – 318 mm Anding – 313 mm Pingtung County

Liouciou – 302 mm Kaohsiung

Dashe – 249 mm Renwu – 239 mm Hunei – 238 mm Further torrential rainfall is expected over the next 24 hours.

Kaohsiung Explosion Damaged Drainage System

Kaohsiung is the location of the recent gas pipeline explosions that killed 30 and injured 310 on 31 July and 2 August. The site of the explosions now resembles a river. The explosions damaged the city’s sewer and drainage system, leaving it unable to cope with the massive amounts of rain.
