De Drie Polders

Constructed Wetland

Created at: 30 Jul 2020

Description

The Three Polders is one of the subprojects of the area development in the Zuidelijk Westerkwartier in the Province of Groningen. Originally this area has always been very wet, but over the years it has been manually drained to stimulate agriculture. Because of climate change, sea level rise and subsidence, the chances of floods due to heavy rainfalls is increasing. In order to make this area more climate adaptive, the Province and Waterboard have taken measures to restore the nature in the area and to retain and buffer excessive water. The aim of the project is to bring back the wet grasslands, and to better connect the ditches and river banks in the area. Ultimately, the area will be able to retain 1.2 million cubic metres of water, which can be used during droughts. Moreover, nature is getting space to expand, which improves the natural habitats of the otter and other animals. All of this makes the Three Polders a future proof area for nature, agriculture, residents and recreation.
