Rijke Dijk

Flood Barrier

Created at: 30 Jul 2020

Description

The Rich Dyke shows how the originally ‘hard’ dykes that we see often in The Netherlands can be made much more attractive for nature. The interventions that this project did along the dyke between the Eemshaven and Delfzijl include the placement of a forest of poles and tidal pools, as well as the elevation of breakwaters in the sea. For the first, a number of poles have been placed along the coastline, connected by ropes that mussels can attach to and grow on. The tidal pools are small pockets in the landscape where water can reside during low tide, creating an ideal living environment for crustaceans, shellfish, mollusca, and algae. And the elevation of the breakwaters ensure resting places for birds during high tide. All of these measures contribute to the dyke’s resilience against higher water levels, and offer opportunities for the development of the local ecosystem.
