SPNA - Salty Soil

Description

The changes to our climate also affect our agriculture systems. Dry summers, submerged fields after heavy rainfalls and the upcoming salinization in coastal areas all have disastrous consequences for food production. How we can deal with these and other changes to the agricultural sector is the central research theme of the European Salfar program. One of the organisations that perform research projects under this program in the Northern-Netherlands is Stichting Proefboerderijen Noordelijke AKkerbouw (SPNA). In this research and knowledge institute, farmers, researchers, policy-makers and entrepreneurs think together on future opportunities for the agriculture sector. One of the projects they developed is ‘Salty Soil’ in Munnikezijl, in which they investigate the effects of salinization on agriculture. Central in this project is a large experimental field in which they water various crop species with both salty and fresh water over a number of seasons. They keep track of various parameters in the soil and crops themselves, and through this process learn lessons on how to deal with salinization effects. This knowledge is then shared with the whole farmer community in the region through the development of a knowledge centre, making this project an example of the importance of investigating and learning together.
