Gorgona Island

Constructed Wetlands: Groundwater Treatment Plants (GWT)

Created at: 25 Aug 2016

Description

the oldest HF systems by IRIDRA operating in Italy ... 1400 m2 in 4 HF CW beds treating a prison and some civilians wastewater

In 1996, IRIDRA managed a constructed wtetland project in the Gorgona Island, Tuscany. The Penitentiary of Gorgona (400 inhabitants) needed a system to treat discharges, able to work also in absence of specialized technical assistance. Considered the scarcity of water it was necessary to reuse treated water. Constructed wetlands turned out to be the most adequate technology for answering these needs. Gorgona plant consists in a primary treatment system (grid and Imhoff tank) and in a secondary treatment system with horizontal subsurface flow basins disposed in two by two in parallel and followed in series by a wet grassland functioning as filter (or lung) between treatment system and environment. The results obtained show that at the outlet the depurative efficiencies are greater than as requested by present law (DL 152/99) for discharge in superficial sea water for less than 2000 person equivalent, also in the months with the greater loads. After 16 years of operation the 4 HF cells CW system is still working properly. The last pictures have been taken on 28/6/2012. The COD outlet was 110 mg/l

http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.168267909916209.41882.102825893127078&type=3
