Cebu Cafe riverChallenge 2021- Cebu: The MidMahiga Project

Plastic Soup (aquatic plastic litter)

Created at: 23 Apr 2021

Description

For the Climate Cafe River Scan Challenge 2021 in Cebu, this project is a collaborative effort of Filipino and Dutch students from Rotterdam University, Hanzeschool of Applied Sciences, and University of San Carlos. The participants are given two weeks to come up with a solution with regards to the problems and issues faced by their assigned river.

The Mahiga River is one of the many small rivers that flow through Cebu City and Mandaue City. These small flows often have no clear origin and usually flow from a higher point to a lower point. The river originates at two points and converge in a larger river that ends in the Mactan Chanel.

The river used to be a source of water for bathing and laundry of the local residents in the area. Due to the discharge of domestic wastewater and solid wastes, the river has become heavily polluted over the years. In 2018, the Mahiga River was considered to be biologically dead with Class C and D classication.
