Description

The Metro Cebu River Scan Challenge 2024 is an event administered by The University of San Carlos, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, and Hanze University of Applied Sciences. With the partnership of the local governments in Metro Cebu and guidance from local and international water experts, the researchers aim to develop viable projects and solutions to enhance water quality and living conditions.

This year, the researchers from team 9 are focusing on the Butuanon River. Their task is to examine the midstream section, identifying untreated wastewater and solid waste from urban areas. The goal is to showcase feasible strategies for rehabilitating these rivers and offering practical solutions to address the issues along the riverbanks.

Team 9’s researchers are tackling the trash pollution crisis in the midstream portion of the Butuanon River in Brgy. Tabok, Sitio Paradise, Mandaue City. The river is heavily filled with garbage, emitting a foul smell, and blocking its natural flow, leading to stagnation. Not only does the stagnant water disrupt the ecosystem, but also becomes a breeding ground for disease-carrying insects, impacting the local community's well-being.
