Saltwater Intrusion (250-550) - Near Tipolo Creek, Mandaue City

Problem Area - Groundwater Problems

Created at: 19 Feb 2024

Description

Saltwater intrusion with a high chloride concentration of 250 - 550 mg/l, according to a 2022 salinity map that was made for a study by the Univeristy of San Carlos - Water Resource Center Foundation Inc. (USC-WRCFI) and the National Water Resources Board (NWRB). During the study, a total of 135 wells were monitored, both public and private. These wells were tested for chloride concentration, nitrite concentration, pH, and electrical conductivity. 23 of these wells are abandoned and are now only used as monitoring wells, creating a groundwater monitoring system. A number of these wells have been monitored since 2013. Sporadically however, wells are closed by private owners or wells are rendered unfit for monitoring due to improper maintenance or lowering of groundwater levels.

Saltwater intrusion is a phenomenon wherein saltwater has encroached freshwater aquifers due to over-extraction of groundwater (Ko, 2021).
