Coastal Erosion of Texel

Nature-based Solutions (large scale)

Created at: 27 Sep 2017

Description

After placing the Afsluitdijk, the (sand) flow around Texel has changed. This reduces the sand supply in opposition to the sand drain. As a result, the dunes strongly calve down and the beach shrinks. So far, the sand deficiency is manually replenished. However, this is not a solution to the problem because the calving is faster than we can manage. The sand on the east and west side of Texel is taken by the sea and this sand ends up on the north and south of the island. As a result, the island is slowly deforming and the land mass becomes smaller and longer.
