Created at: 12 Jan 2024

Description

On December 27th 2023, the municipality of Emsbüren ordered the evacuation of a part of the holiday home neighbourhood in Gleesen. Due to the Christmas floods (Weihnachtshochwasser 2023), due to the significant flooding of the Ems River, which was caused by the unusually heavy and persistent rainfall. The river banks, including various fields and roads and the residential area, were inundated, posing a risk to the residents.

On the morning of December 27th, the DLRG (German Life Saving Society) started informing the residents of the evacuation order and was later supported by the German Red Cross (DRK) and police, while members of the local fire brigade constructed a makeshift dike with sand bags. Electricity to the neighborhood was later cut off.

Although the dike held, it had to be heightened and reinforced the next days.
