Description

Delfzijl was founded as a defensive settlement during the Medieval Period, where it occupied a strategic position between the city of Groningen and the open sea. Over the years, it grew into a large port city and even became the most important port for the Northern-Netherlands. After the Second World War the Dutch had to focus on economic development and as a consequence, Delfzijl was appointed as a suitable place for the development of industries. To facilitate this, the location of the port was relocated and the city centre lost its direct connection to the Waddensea. With the program Marconi (Maritime Concepts In Frame), the city now tries to restore this connection with the sea and to develop a new cityscape. The Marconi program consists of a series of projects, of which ‘Marconi Outside the Dykes’ is developed first. This project focusses on the development of a salt marsh along the coastline of Delfzijl. This does not only help in coastal protection, but also expands a natural ecosystem for local flaura and fauna and allows for sludge from the Eems-Dollard to sink in. In addition, the sea dyke is relocated land inwards and elevated, creating room for a larger beach area and recreational facilities on and around the dyke. This enormous project improves the local liveability, biodiversity, economy and coastal protection and attempts to restore Delfzijl to its former glory.
