Multifunctional Climate Adaptation

Description

The region around Delfzijl has been quite dynamic in the past few years. Not only is it prone to a rising sea level and salinization, but it’s also dealing with a loss of biodiversity due to increasing sludge levels in the Eems-Dollard and regional subsidence due to peat oxidation. The project Eemszijlen offers an integrated solution for all these developments and consists of 2 parts. The first is converting a flushing sluice into a recreational one in the city of Delfzijl, which should have positive effects on urban development, economy and recreational activities. The second part consists of the diversion of the flushing sluice towards the Groote Polder, a low-lying area near Termunterzijl. There, a wet natural zone will be created, with an open connection to the Eems-Dollard. It will incorporate possibilities to catch sludge from the Eems-Dollard and to recreate in the area. This area allows for more water to be carried off during heavy rainfalls, forms a new habitat for flora and fauna to thrive in and offers all kinds of possibilities for fresh water retention, fish migration and gradual transitions between salt and fresh water. All in all, it’s a project that shows how climate adaptation, liveability, economy, nature and agriculture go hand in hand together.
