AquaParker is the climate-adaptive parking solution for creating water storage with ground passage and ground infiltration in existing and new parking spaces. The concept was developed as a solution to the growing problems caused by climate change. Particularly in urban areas, the amount of surfacing of streets, sidewalks and parking lots increasingly leads to flooding and heat stress. aquaParker is a water-buffering parking solution that collects the water during extreme rainfall and 'parks' it temporarily. Once the soil can handle it again, the collected water is slowly infiltrated into the soil.

aquaParker is an innovative parking solution that consists of three layers. The top layer consists of a stable concrete slab, which provides a solid base for parking vehicles. This plate is 20 cm thick and has holes. The holes allow water to quickly penetrate into the subsoil, preventing flooding. The open structure also offers space to sow the plates with a herbal mixture for a varied image in terms of foliage and flowers. The planting not only contributes to better air quality and greater biodiversity, it also helps to prevent heat stress. There are several options for planting, each of which can be driven over. The planting is also resistant to drought as well as extreme wetness, and to road salt.

A substrate has been placed under the concrete slab. This substrate has a good water permeability function and at the same time provides a good breeding ground for the plants. In addition to its permeable properties, the substrate purifies the rainwater before it infiltrates the soil.

The sub-package provides the water buffering capacity that makes the aquaParker unique. Rainwater that cannot infiltrate at regular parking spaces and that flows away via the sewer system is stored at the aquaParker under the parking lot. The water remains available to the soil and is released again as soon as the water absorption capacity allows. Desiccation is thus prevented and the living conditions of nearby trees and other greenery are improved.


Samenvatting (Dutch description)

In het concept aquaParker vormt de vulling van de waterdoorlatende gaten in de afdekplaat een belangrijke rol. Hiermee wordt voor een groot deel de uitstraling bepaald. Uitgangspositie is dat de beplanting zowel tegen veel water als tegen droogte kan. De beplanting moet bovendien tegen een stootje kunnen en onderhoudsarm zijn. Gelukkig blijven er dan nog tal van mogelijkheden over. Zo zijn er gekweekte planten, die zich onderscheiden door bladvorm, bloemkleur en hoogte. Deze kunnen eventueel gecombineerd worden, wat een uniek beeld geeft. Enkele voorbeelden van geschikte planten zijn loopkamille, kruiptijm, stekelnootje, sedum en het koperknopje. De aquaParker kan ook worden ingezaaid met kruiden die in het wild voorkomen. De uitstraling zal dan ook natuurlijker zijn. Daarbij is het altijd een verrassing wat waar op komt. Te denken valt aan muizenoor, zilverschoon, witte klaver en kruipganzerik. Tot slot kan natuurlijk ook worden gekozen om geen beplanting aan te brengen en de gaten te vullen met schelpen, split of breuksteen.
