Description

The Metro Cebu River Climate Scan 2024 is a 2-week challenge participated in by Cebuano-Dutch students from the University of San Carlos, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, and Hanze University of Applied Sciences. The aim is to study and develop feasible solutions/projects to improve water conditions, guided by local and international water experts.

Team 10 is assigned to the midstream portion of the Butuanon River located in Brgy. Tabok, Sitio Almers, Mandaue City. The Butuanon River experiences severe trash pollution constantly. Due to the sheer volume of garbage present, a strong odor permeates throughout the community, affecting the residents' quality of life. Additionally, the volume of trash obstructs the natural path of the river, impeding flow. In essence, due to the trash, little to no flow occurs in the river, stagnating it. These stagnant waters create a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other insects, which can spread diseases that could potentially affect these communities.

Team 10 aims to address alternative disposal paths for the trash. The solution is designed to provide convenience in waste disposal, minimize the influx of trash into the river, and ultimately improve water quality by significantly reducing litter contamination within the river ecosystem. It involves containers painted with weather-resistant coatings, trolleys, cables, or lines, utilizing sturdy and lightweight materials to ensure maneuverability.
