Water Quality Monitoring and Improvement

Description

The activities of the people who live along the banks of the Butuanon River in Cebu have a complex role in the pollution of the river. Even while these people depend on the river for their daily needs, over time their actions have unintentionally led to the pollution of the waterway. Inadequate waste management practices are one of the main causes of pollution. Because informal communities and makeshift settlements along the riverbanks frequently lack adequate sanitation facilities, sewage and household trash are dumped directly into the river. Garbage from households, such as plastic bags, bottles, and other non-biodegradable materials, clogs rivers and contaminates the environment of the river, aggravating the situation. The Butuanon River presents numerous issues to the community today, all of which are equally negative. Debris commonly clogs the waterway, erosion of the riverbanks, the unpleasant stink of the murky water, and the list goes on. Not to mention the biohazard caused by tainted water, which continues to endanger the well-being of local people. This alarming condition sparked our River Scan Challenge, in which students from the University of San Carlos, Hanze University of Applied Sciences, and Rotterdam University will come up with solutions in order to prevent the Butuanon River from collapsing.
