Beekherstel de Hunze

Water Quality Monitoring and Improvement

Created at: 19 Feb 2021

Description

The restoration of stream valleys has been an upcoming phenomenon and is a reaction on the process of Streams in Drenthe being turned into canals for a long time. This started at the beginning of the 20th century to stimulate the water drainage in order to stimulate intensive forms of agriculture. During the 80’s, a movement of ecological awareness came up and with that for the restoration of stream valleys. As a result, the Hunze vision was developed in 1995: the Hunzedal had to become a natural stream valley once again.

For more than twenty years, Drentse Landschap and Groninger Landschap have worked together with the waterboard Hunze en Aa’s and other actors to buy grounds around the stream valley. Together with among others the national government, province and municipalities, water companies, recreational entrepreneurs and volunteers, they succeeded in largely restoring the area. Slowly but steadily, parts of the stream valley are functioning as ecological connections for flora and fauna, and improvements in the local water quality can be measured. By restoring the Hunze, its water storing capacity has been increased, the heat stress in urban parts of the stream has been decreased, all kinds of recreational activities have been established and the cultural historic character of the area has been strengthened.
