Rietproef

Problem Area - Rainwater Nuisance

Storage for water

Created at: 19 Feb 2021

Description

The Lauwersmeer used to be an estuary with an open connection to the Waddensea. In response to the large floods in Zeeland in 1953, it was decided to build a dyke around the estuary to guarantee security against floods, creating the Lauwersmeer. As a consequence of closing the estuary, the banks of the lake are slowly filling up with trees and plants. These are pushing away the natural reed areas that grow in the banks and are home to unique flora and fauna. The Reed Trial is supposed to counter this effect by elevating the water level of the lake by half a meter, forcing the trees and plants back and allowing the reeds space to grow again. In addition, the Lauwersmeer has an important function of water storage, where excessive (rain)water from the surroundings can be taken to. Once the water level of the Lauwersmeer is higher than that of the Waddensea, this excessive water can be flushed off. By artificially elevating the water level of the lake, this process is made much easier. Therefore, this project doesn’t just offer benefits for local flora and fauna, but it also offers an important and innovative climate adaptation measure.
